Report on school bag distribution at simankhwala primary school, ta mkukula, dowa, malawi.
At the beginning of this year, the Country Director of Source of Life Children Foundation Malawi, Pastor Innocent Semu, together with local volunteers visited Simankhwala Primary School to distribute school bags to a hundred students of 6 to 8 years from primary standard 1 to standard 3.
Most children at Simankhwala had no school bags to carry their notebook, some were carrying in plastic bags, and some were using their parent’s old handbags. During the rainy season, their notebooks were getting so wet and wasted that they could no longer use them. Distributing these school bags to these children not only did it bring a smile on their faces, but it also contributed to the success of their studies.
Case Study at Simankhwala Primary School
The primary school has a major challenge in retaining students due to hunger. The Head teacher together with the school committee emphasised that hunger is a key challenge that causes children to miss school. They felt that there is a need for a school feeding program to keep the students in school. This will entail cooking porridge daily for the students. This acts as a motivation to keep students in school and to actively participate.

Education | Problem Statement Every child has the right to learn.
The school has an enrolment of 1,460 students but so far only 600 attend school regularly. This is attributed to the hunger in the area and lack of necessities in their families which in the end make families ask their little children to help them with getting piece works around the area to supplement the families’ incomes.
Apart from hunger, another challenge is the lack of school uniforms. The head teacher and the school committee asked if there can be intervention by giving the students school uniforms. It was noted that under 50% of them have uniforms.
Conclusion and Recommendation
The activity was a success, the students, teachers and parents were happy and thankful for the school bags donation.
The Country Director feels there is a need to do a thorough scientific needs assessment soonest to determine exactly what the community and the school need. This will assist the organization to come up with interventions that will best assist them. The volunteers with guidance from the organization are ready to do this whenever called upon to.
